MERKLE, Fred *

Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Fred Merkle, a player with the New York Giants baseball team, appeared in the Thanhouser-Princess film, The Final Game, which depicted highlights from the last game of the 1913 World Series, played in New York City on October 11, 1913.

Biographical Notes: Frederick Charles Merkle was born on December 20, 1888 in Watertown, Wisconsin. He was a major league baseball player for 16 years and participated in five World Series contests (1911, 1912, 1913, 1916, and 1918). Standing 6'1" tall, he weighed 155 pounds. In the final game of the 1913 World Series, filmed by Thanhouser, he played first base and was at bat three times. Merkle died on March 2, 1956 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
