Volume III: Biographies

DARLING, George *

(a.k.a. George Dowling)

Actor (1914-1915)

Thanhouser Career Synopsis: A notice in the New Rochelle Pioneer, December 5, 1914, stated that Director James Durkin was directing George Darling, a seven and one-half foot tall English actor, in films. This was shortly before Durkin resigned from Thanhouser.

Biographical Notes: An obituary notice in the January 5, 1929 issue of The Billboard relates that George Darling, former vaudeville artist, died recently in New York City at the Metropolitan Hospital. He was said to have been an intimate friend of many theatrical personalities.

The New Rochelle Pioneer, April 3, 1915, stated that George Dowling, "the British giant" - obviously the same person as the George Darling mentioned earlier - was working with Arthur Levien, a child actor, in a film directed by Arthur Ellery. In publicity for Big Brother Bill, the "big brother" was credited as Jack Dowling and Jack Darling. It is believed that this was the same person as George Darling.

The author of the present work does not know which of the four names used: George Darling, Jack Darling, George Dowling, or Jack Dowling is correct.
