Volume III: Biographies

(BRISCOE, Lottie)

Actress(?)

Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Miss Briscoe's involvement with Thanhouser, if any, is unknown to the present author. In the 1918 edition of the Motion Picture Studio Directory, Howard M. Mitchell stated that he spent two years at Thanhouser directing Gladys Hulette and Lottie Briscoe. Hulette was a well-known Thanhouser player at the time, but no other account of Briscoe's involvement with Thanhouser has been located by the author. As Briscoe was with Majestic (a firm with a corporate connection to Thanhouser) at one time, this probably explains Mitchell's comment.

Biographical Notes: Lottie Briscoe was born on April 19, 1881. Beginning at the age of four, she followed a career on the stage. Decades later, she acted in movies. She was a well-known screen actress during the period after 1910 and was prominently identified with Essanay, where she had been for two years by 1911, IMP (where she played the maid in The Tables Turned), and, in particular, Lubin, where she became a well-known actress. She then went to Majestic for a short time, and then she returned to Lubin. Later she went to Metro. Lottie Briscoe died in New York City on March 19, 1950.
