FARLEY, Cardinal *

Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Cardinal Farley, of the Roman Catholic Church, appeared briefly in a Thanhouser film in 1912.

Biographical Notes: John Murphy Farley was born in Newtown-Hamilton, Ireland, in 1842 and came to America in 1864. He was ordained by the Roman Catholic Church in Rome in 1870, after which he served as secretary to Archbishop McCloskey, succeeding him as archbishop of New York in 1902. In 1911 he became a cardinal. When Cardinal Farley returned from Europe on the Berlin, on January 17, 1912, his arrival in New York City was captured on film by Powers (Reception to Cardinal Farley, 1-27-1912), Nestor (Cardinal Farleys Return, 2-5-1912), IMP (The Return of Cardinal Farley, 1-18-1912, just one day after his arrival), and others. Cardinal Farleys death occurred in New York City in 1918.
