GRIMMER, George A.

Actor, assistant director, studio manager

(1913-1917)

Thanhouser Career Synopsis: George A. Grimmer was an actor, later an assistant director, with Thanhouser from about 1913 to 1917.

Biographical Notes: George A. Grimmer worked as an actor with Thanhouser beginning about 1913, soon becoming an assistant director. In December 1915 he was sent to Jacksonville, Florida to manage Thanhouser's new studio there. In 1917 he was dismissed, due to what The New Rochelle Pioneer newspaper described as a "dullness in the moving picture game due to the war spirit."

New Rochelle city directories give George A. Grimmer's occupation as that of a clerk, and his address in 1910 as 6 Howe Avenue, and his address in 1911 as 417 Main Street. In 1913 and 1914 he was a clerk, and lived at 150 Main Street. In 1915 he was listed as a stage manager, and lived at 30 LeCount Place. The 1916 directory omits his name. In 1917 he is listed as a motion picture director living at 8 Centre Avenue. For a period of time he lived with his brother, Frank A. Grimmer. His wife Agnes worked for the Thanhouser studio in Jacksonville in 1916.

Note: His surname was occasionally misspelled as "Grimma" (for example, in the October 1913 issue of The Motion Picture Story Magazine).
