LEVINE, Harold Zachary

Temporary publicist (1911)

Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Harold Zachary Levine was publicity director on a temporary basis in the autumn of 1911.

Biographical Notes: Harold Zachary Levine, usually listed in print as H.Z. Levine, was tapped to manage Thanhouser publicity in the autumn of 1911. The Billboard, September 30, 1911, reported: "During the absence of Bertram Adler from the Thanhouser Company, from which place he was removed to the hospital two weeks hence, a victim of typhoid, Mr. H.Z. Levine has temporarily assumed his responsibilities. Leon J. Rubenstein was accomplishing temporarily the work of Mr. Adler until last week, when his other duties necessitated his departure from the Thanhouser forces."

Born in New York City, H.Z. Levine was educated in public schools there, after which he did some graduate work. Early in his career he worked for The Brooklyn Eagle, which in its day was one of the most respected newspapers of the New York City area, and which was known for its extensive use of photographs. Later, he went into the film industry and became advertising manager for Blaché, publicity director in London for the Universal company, advertising manager for Fox, and, by 1916, a purchasing agent for Triangle.
