Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Harry Bates was an actor with Thanhouser circa 1913-1916.

Biographical Notes: Harry Gillespie Bates was born in 1870 in Asheville, North Carolina, and made his stage debut in 1889. He toured with The Virginian for eight years, was in Sherlock Holmes with William Gillette in the teens, and was seen in numerous other productions on the boards. With his wife, Maude, he toured the country with the Harry Bates and Maude Morrison Stock Company.

Harry Bates appeared in Thanhouser films for several years but received very little publicity and was not a member of the Thanhouser stock company. Rather, he worked in New Rochelle between theatre engagements. He died in East Islip, New York, at the Percy Williams Home for Retired Actors, on December 29, 1932. Active until the end of his life, two weeks earlier he sang at a dinner staged by the East Islip Athletic Club.
